Botched Robbery: Man Charged In Near-Fatal Stamford Shooting

A man has been charged in connection with a near-fatal shooting during a botched robbery in Fairfield County.

The shooting occurred in the early morning of Wednesday, Feb. 9 in the rear driveway of 146 Henry St. in Stamford.

When police arrived on the scene they found a man who had been shot in the stomach causing life-threatening injuries.

The victim was transported to Stamford Hospital where he spent several days in the intensive care unit and is still recovering from his injuries, said Stamford Police Capt. Thomas Scanlon.

After a lengthy investigation conducted by the Stamford Police Major Crimes Unit, Scanlon said one of the three men and the vehicle used during the robbery were developed.

On Tuesday, April 4, Jose Enrique Montanez, age 37, of Bridgeport, who was identified as the shooter in the case, was arrested after investigators tracked him down not far from where the incident took place and took him into custody with the assistance of the Special Response Team and Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit personnel, Scanlon said.

Montanez was charged with:

  • Assault
  • Robbery
  • Conspiracy at robbery
  • Criminal possession of a firearm

Montanez, who has numerous drug-related felonies and an escape conviction is being held on a $900,000 bond.
